Plenary Council 2020

Plenary Council of the Church in Australia is to be held in 2020. This is a journey which we begin now and will last beyond the year 2021.

The Plenary Council is envisaged to be held in two gatherings, one in Adelaide in October 2020, another in May 2021.

A Plenary Council is a rare occurrence in Australia, with the last being held in 1937.

This year we have a Diocesan Assembly in preparation for the Plenary Council on 13 and 14 September. The Diocesan Assembly, while part of the overall Plenary journey, is of vital importance as it will provide us with the opportunity to together discern and discuss what it is that we can do here and now for our local Church in the Diocese of Sale.

Bishop O’Regan has convened a local working group, to be known by the title the Gaudium et Spes, (Joy and Hope) (G&S) Committee.

This group of 10 members of the diocesan family, which met for the first time on January 30, 2018 will be responsible for assisting us as a diocese to prepare for the coming Plenary Council. This email address is being protected from spambots. What is happening next…

Diocesan Pilgrimage

In the months leading up to the Assembly, the Diocesan community is being invited to embark on a period of prayer and preparation with a Diocesan Pilgrimage of the Icon of our Lady of Perpetual Help (the patroness of our Diocese) and the Diocesan Plenary 2020 Candle. Each parish will host the Icon and Candle for one week with the opportunity to receive and bless the Icon at weekend Masses and have it displayed for prayer during the week.  This commences at St Mary’s Cathedral on February 24 and visits each parish though until arriving in Warragul for the Diocesan Assembly.

See the Diocesan Assembly and Pilgrimage  page for details on when the icon and candle will visit your parish.

A Plenary Song has been composed by Jane Mitchell and Drew Lane called   pdf Without Fear (Holy Spirit Come). (514 KB)   A song for Plenary Blessings composed for the Catholic Diocese of Sale.

The Journey so far…..

Plenary Days in the Diocese

The Plenary Days in the Dioceses with Lana Turvey-Collins, the National Plenary Council facilitator was held on March 15 and 16. Lana spent two days with us-with all of our clergy on March 15 and with all the Parish Plenary Teams and School Plenary Contacts on March 16.

She will facilitated some formation, reflection and discussion about the next stage of the National Plenary process the Listening and Discernment phase. See our Facebook page for photos from these gatherings.

Listening and Dialogue sessions

Listening and Dialogue with the Bishop were held in five locations in October and November 2018. You can read a summary of the raw response which have been sent through to the Plenary Council from our Diocese from these sessions. Here are the raw  pdf Responses (674 KB)

Proclaim Conference
The Bishop, the members of the G&S Committee and representatives from various parishes attended the Proclaim Conference in July 2018. This enabled them to gather ideas for the preparation phase.

Open parish meetings
In  the first half of 2018 the Bishop held meetings in each of our 27 Parishes.

The aim of the meetings being to let people know what this process is all about; to introduce who the members of local Gaudium et Spes committee are; give an update of what the Sale Diocese looks like in 2018, and to begin the process of listening to members of each parish.

More than 1,000 people attended the meeting and shared their thoughts with the Bishop and members of the G & S Committee.

These parish meetings were first step, among many.

Parish Plenary Groups

Each parish has been being asked to have a plenary group which will assist in animating the many plenary conversations and gatherings in the coming months. The plenary group may be the parish pastoral council or could be another group formed for the plenary process.
