Journey of the WYD Cross and Icon of Our Lady
In 1984 Pope John Paul II entrusted to the world's youth a huge wooden cross, asking that it be 'carried throughout the world as a sign of Christ's love for humanity'. On Palm Sunday in 2003, the Pope announced that the WYD Cross would be accompanied on its pilgrimage by the Icon of Our Lady, Salus Populi Romani, a copy of a venerated icon in Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
The Cross and Icon are currently travelling to all dioceses in Australia as a means of promoting dialogue with youth and of enabling evangelization, catechesis and prayer to create a sense of anticipation around World Youth Day.
The WYD Cross and Icon journeyed through the Diocese of Sale April 18-24, 2008. The pilgrimage touched each region of the Diocese in a unique and moving way.
Alternatively you can visit the JCI blog site on the World Youth Day Sydney website at www.wyd2008.org to catch up on where the Cross and Icon have been recently.
