BISHOP'S FAMILY FOUNDATION

AN IDEA FOR THE FUTURE

The Bishop's Family Foundation was launched in June 1999 with the aim of raising a substantial capital base to be used in helping fund programs assisting families in the Greater Gippsland area which the Diocese of Sale covers.

Originally the target was $3 million but in March 2004 it was realised that $10 million was a more reasonable target. With a fund of $10 million, the foundation would be able to distribute between $500,000 and $1 million a year on projects benefitting Gippsland families. Major facilities such as palliative care and nursing homes could be constructed in relatively short time.

Investment of monies donated so far have enabled projects totalling $296,000 to be funded by the trustees over the past five years. These monies include a special payment of $15,000 to aid families affected by the disastrous fire in East Gippsland during January and February 2003. Another special allocation of $10,000 was made from its reserve funds in January 2005 to aid victims of the Asian tsunami.

While most of the funds raised have come from within the Catholic community, proceeds are distributed on a non-denominational needs basis across the whole community.

Applications for funding are sought every June-July and are allocated in October or November.
