The Catholic Diocese of Sale is situated in the eastern Victoria region of Gippsland and at its western end includes rapidly expanding outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Its administrative offices are at Sion House, 6 Witton St., Warragul and St Mary's Cathedral is situated at Sale. The diocese is awaiting a new bishop, following the appointment on September 12, 2013, of our eighth bishop Bishop Christopher Prowse to be Archbishop of Canberra & Goulburn.

Former Bishop of Sale, Jeremiah Coffey died age 81 at Bairnsdale on the morning of November 19, 2014. His funeral will take place at St Mary's Cathedral, Sale, on Tuesday, December 2 at 11am.
The previous evening at St Mary's Church, Bairnsdale, there will be rosary at 5pm, followed by a vigil mass at 6pm. Bishop Coffey will then be taken to the cathedral in Sale where the rite of reception will be held around 8.30pm, followed by prayers until 11pm.
